Kansas City Zoo Preschool

KC Zoo has a new Thursday morning preschool program called "Science Adventure Club". It's for 3-5 year olds with a chaperone. The cost is $4 per session (I am a zoo member, it may be $5 for non members). The first thing we did was to make name buttons. There were several line drawings of animals cut out in circles, and the kids each could pick one and color it and write their name upon it. Then the staff made these into buttons with a button press. Then, we went into the preschool room. The first 10 minutes or so were spent in free play: there was homemade play dough, a water table, some foam blocks, and a few other toys. Then the "teacher" had everyone go to a carpet square if they were comfortable, or mama's lap if they weren't...this was flexible. We sang some songs and the kids got to have little tambourines to shake while we sang. Then we got to touch things in a "treasure box". The items were all surrounding the "sea creature" theme. There was a sea urchin shell, a conch shell, a dried sand dollar, a dried starfish, an "ocean in a bottle"...you get the idea. Then she read us a short book about otters, and the kids did an art project with paper plates, glue, markers, and yarn. After this, we walked over to the polar bear area to see the polar bear, and then we walked over to "The Tropics" to see the river otters. That concluded the session.
